Unveiling the Best New Train Journeys, from High-Speed Marvels to Vintage Sleeper Delights

It's official, 2024 is set to be a banner year for train travel, with new and exciting routes rolling out around the globe. Whether you are interested or not. Several exciting new train routes are launching this year that will make it easier than ever for travellers to explore different parts of the world.

A brand-new high-speed train route is set to connect Milan, Italy, to Ljubljana, Slovenia, with a swift two-and-a-half-hour journey. The agreement between Italy's Trenitalia and Slovenia's SZ Passenger Transport hints at a potential launch in April 2024.

The route promises a dreamy ride through picturesque cities, including Trieste, Venice, Padua, and Verona in Italy, and charming stops like Divaccia in Slovenia. This town is famous for its stunning underground caves. Initially, one daily train will whisk passengers away, with plans to increase to two trains per day for even more convenient travel options.

Another new train route is an extension of Japan's Hokuriku Shinkansen route, which will make it easier for tourists to explore more of Japan’s Hokuriku region. The train will be extended from Kanazawa Station in Ishikawa Prefecture to Tsuruga Station in Fukui Prefecture, and the journey from Tokyo to Tsuruga will take as little as 2 hours and 51 minutes

Italy is also set to get a glamorous new sleeper train this year called the Orient Express La Dolce Vita. The train will operate overnight routes on six different itineraries throughout the country, evoking a 1960s-era Italy with private suites and cabins that exude mid-century sophistication. The train will also include a restaurant car serving gourmet Italian specialities and a bar car serving cocktails and Italian wines.

Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express train is also making a comeback this year after a pandemic-induced hiatus. The decadent sleeper train will be operating roundtrip journeys out of Singapore, travelling through the lush landscapes of Malaysia and stopping at several cities and coastal retreats along the way.

On board, guests can expect live entertainment, gourmet Malaysian cuisine, and elegantly appointed cabins.

Finally, two European capitals, Paris and Berlin, will be more connected than ever this year with the launch of two notable train routes. Nightjets has started a new overnight route between the two cities and a high-speed route using France’s maglev bullet train, TGV, is expected to begin operating by the end of 2024.
